FAQ

  • What exams do I need to take to become a helicopter pilot?

To gain your private pilot's licence you will need to pass 9 multiple choice theoretical examinations. Five of the 9 exams are referred to as 'common subjects' meaning they are common between helicopter and aeroplane licences. The remaining four are 'helicopter specific'. Whilst there is a wealth of material out there aimed towards the aeroplane theory, it has always been difficult to pin down one resource that will prepare you for the 4 helicopter specific exams. This is where 'The Helicopter Tutor' comes in.

  • Which exams can I study for using The Helicopter Tutor?

The Helicopter Tutor contains material for Principles of Flight, Aircraft General Knowledge, Operational Procedures, and Flight Performance and Planning. As well as this we offer additional courses that you may find useful including our Threat and Error Management short video course, and our flagship R44 Type Rating Theory course.

  • Does The Helicopter Tutor follow a syllabus?

In one simple word: Yes. All of our material is based on the EASA and UK learning objectives for the particular examination. There is other material out there in the form of books and other online resources but we found that much of this did not sufficiently cover the learning objectives. Many pilots will never see the learning objectives and will therefore trust that the material they have used is comprehensive enough to pass the examination, when in fact it isn't.

  • Will I pass the exam after studying the material?

It is difficult to predict what questions will be asked during the examination. If you have studied and understood the material you will be in a great position to answer the examination questions correctly. Occasionally a question appears that is not expected, and not necessarily in-line with the learning objectives. If you find this is the case then we appreciate the feedback. We can then update our material accordingly.

  • Is all of the material relevant?

You will not be asked a question on everything that you have seen and read during the courses, however we believe that learning the content at your own pace is far more effective than trying to learn the questions and answers.

  • In what format are the courses?

Our courses range from digital text with complimentary graphics, to presenter videos and animation. Audio to text is also provided where possible which is more engaging than just plain text itself. Our courses feature an array of images compared with traditional textbooks.

  • What are the benefits of using The Helicopter Tutor?

Aviation theory is stuck in the dark ages. In today's modern world many people prefer to read electronically. Digital material makes it easier for us to add or amend our content when we need to. This way you can always be sure you have the most up-to-date version of the material.
